Call us at 519-837-1870
We always try to save a tooth first, but sometimes taking it out is the best thing for your health. At Guelph Royal Dental Centre on Douglas St in downtown Guelph, we do simple and surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth. If you’re in pain now, call 519-837-1870 and ask about a same day appointment.
When a tooth may need to come out
- Decay or a break so large that a filling or crown can’t fix it
- An infection that hasn’t responded to other treatment
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- Wisdom teeth that are impacted, partly erupted or causing pain and infection
- Crowding, in some cases
Simple and surgical extractions
A simple extraction removes a tooth that’s fully visible in the mouth. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline, has curved roots or hasn’t fully come in, which is common with wisdom teeth. Either way, the area is frozen first so you feel pressure rather than pain. If you’re nervous, ask about nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
Wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth often don’t have enough room to come in straight. They can push against the tooth in front, trap food and bacteria, and cause swelling and infection. We’ll take X-rays, and 3D CBCT imaging when a regular X-ray isn’t enough, to see their position and explain whether they should come out now, later or not at all.
Aftercare
- Bite gently on gauze for the first while to help a clot form
- Avoid smoking, straws and spitting hard for the first few days
- Stick to soft foods and chew on the other side
- Follow the instructions we give you for pain relief and rinsing
- Call us if bleeding, swelling or pain gets worse instead of better
Replacing the tooth
If the tooth was visible when you smiled or chewed, we’ll talk about replacing it before the extraction. Options include a fixed bridge, a partial denture or a dental implant.
Insurance, direct billing and CDCP
We bill most plans directly, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and can send an estimate to your insurer first. Read our CDCP page for details. For anything your plan doesn’t cover, we accept cash, debit and Visa, Mastercard and Amex.
